Snickerdoodle Cookie Chex Mix

The perfect autumn snack mix, with cookies and cinnamon and all the good stuff

Ingredients
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 cup flour
1 tube Pillsbury™ refrigerated sugar cookies
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon corn syrup
1 tablespoon butter
1 cup whole pecans
3 cups Cinnamon Chex™ cereal
1 cup Chocolate Chex™ cereal (or 1 more cup of Cinnamon Chex™)
1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions
Heat oven to 350ºF.
Combine the sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.
Sprinkle flour onto work surface; knead flour into cookie dough. Tear off teaspoon-sized balls of dough and roll between your hands to create a smooth ball. Add all but 2 teaspoons of the cinnamon sugar to a gallon-sized zip-top bag. Reserve the remaining 2 teaspoons of cinnamon sugar for later. Add the cookie balls to the bag and seal it. Gently toss the balls with the cinnamon sugar until all the cookie balls are coated.
Place the cookie balls 1 inch apart on a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Bake five minutes or until set. Remove and allow to cool. Reduce oven temp to 300ºF.

Meanwhile, place the brown sugar, corn syrup, and 1 tablespoon of butter in a heavy bottomed skillet. Place the skillet over medium heat. Stir the mixture until it comes together and bubbles. Add the nuts and toss well; cook for 5-8 minutes or until the nuts are toasted and caramelized. Stir the nuts often to ensure they don't burn. Transfer from the skillet to a plate lined with wax paper.

In a large bowl toss together the cereals, melted stick of butter, vanilla and 1-2 teaspoons of the remaining cinnamon sugar from earlier. Toss well and then spread out between two cookie sheets. Bake for 15 minutes at 300ºF, stirring once or twice during cooking. Remove and allow to cool. Once cool, add the cereal, snickerdoodles and pecans to a large bowl and toss well. Serve.

HOLIDAY HAZARD CHECKLIST

fireplace
Lights, decorations and toys are a wonderful part of the holidays. But if you have young children, you need to take special precautions to make sure they're safe. Here are expert tips to ensure that your family's holiday season is happy, healthy and hazard-free.

Safer Trees and Decorations
When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label "Fire Resistant." Although this label does not mean the tree won't catch fire, it does indicate the tree will resist burning and should extinguish quickly.

When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness. A fresh tree is green, needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. The trunk butt of a fresh tree is sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles.

When setting up a tree at home, place it away from fireplaces and radiators. Because heated rooms dry live trees out rapidly, be sure to keep the stand filled with water. Place the tree out of the way of traffic and do not block doorways.
Cut a few inches off the trunk of your tree to expose the fresh wood. This allows for better water absorption and will help to keep your tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard.

Use only noncombustible or flame-resistant materials to trim a tree. Choose tinsel or artificial icicles of plastic or nonleaded metals. Leaded materials are hazardous if ingested by children.

Never use lighted candles on a tree or near other evergreens. Always use nonflammable holders and place candles out of children's reach.
Take special care to avoid decorations that are sharp or breakable, keep trimmings with small removable parts out of the reach of children to avoid the child swallowing or inhaling small pieces, and avoid trimmings that resemble candy or food, which may tempt a child to eat them.

Wear gloves to avoid eye and skin irritation while decorating with spun glass "angel hair." Follow container directions carefully to avoid lung irritation while decorating with artificial-snow sprays.

Bright Ideas for Lights
Indoors or outside, always use lights that have been tested for safety by a recognized testing laboratory that indicates conformance with safety standards.
Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections, and throw out damaged sets.

Use no more than three standard-size sets of lights per single extension cord.
Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electricity from faulty lights, and a person touching a branch could be electrocuted.

Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use.

Fasten outdoor lights securely to trees, house walls, or other firm supports to protect the lights from wind damage. Use insulated staples to hold strings in place, not nails or tacks. Or run strings of lights through hooks (available at hardware stores).

Plug all outdoor electric decorations into circuits with ground fault circuit interrupters to avoid potential shocks.

Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The lights could short out and start a fire.

Friendlier Fireplaces
Use care with "fire salts," which produce colored flames when thrown on wood fires. They contain heavy metals that can cause intense gastrointestinal irritation and vomiting if eaten. Keep them away from children. Do not burn wrapping papers in the fireplace. A flash fire may result, as wrappings ignite suddenly and burn intensely. Before lighting any fire, remove all greens, boughs, papers, and other decorations from fireplace area. Check to see that the flue is open

Restoring Your Home After a Fire - Types of Smoke and Smoke Damage

It pays to be aware that not all smoke is the same, the type of smoke damage that has affected your house will differ depending on the type of fire that has taken place. Each of the following types of smoke require a different type of smoke damage restoration approach.

A smoldering fire will give off a thick smoke that coats the surfaces of the room completely. The result is a sticky, smeared smoke pattern that resembles a web.

A high-temperature fire that burns very rapidly will produce a lighter smoke pattern, although there is a far greater likelihood that there will be significant charring in the room.
Plastics and chemicals give off a toxic smoke that becomes almost invisible when it stains the walls but it is extremely pungent. This kind of smoke will stain the paint or varnish on the walls.

A blocked furnace or fireplace flue will force an oily soot back into the living room. It can also result in a fire at the blockage point. Either way you are left with an oily deposit that is particularly difficult to clean.

Smoke will generally result in two types of damage. Firstly, the visible staining of walls and other surfaces is immediately noticeable. Just as pervading is the unmistakable odor that has become deeply embedded in hard surfaces and soft furnishing alike. Knowing how to deal with each type of smoke damage is the specialty of a fire damage restoration company and they will be able to advise on the best way to deal with smoke damage and can then carry out the necessary work to remove it.

Importantly, surfaces left untreated with smoke or soot damage can become increasingly discolored as time goes by. Painted or varnished surfaces will discolor considerably and can go from restorable to unsalvageable in the space of a week. For this reason it is important to remove fire residue as soon after the fire as is practicable.

The best way to deal with fire damage is to get some professional assistance from those who know the correct fire and smoke damage cleanup procedures.

Emergency Restoration Services, Reduce Further Damage

When your home experiences a fire or flood, professional assistance in restoring your home from the damage, reducing further damage, and minimizing losses is vital. Emergency restoration services exist to help in both fire damage repair and water damage repair. From roof tarping to board-up services, an emergency restoration service can attend to all the details you may not even have realized needed attending.

The right emergency restoration service will not only reduce further water and fire damage and restore the property to the condition it was in prior to the incident, but it can also do it with a minimum of disruption to your household and all due haste, while being sure to follow all the necessary procedures to ensure and total repair and restoration.

Getting adequate professional fire damage repair and water damage repair services can be costly. Fortunately, depending on the source of your damage and what types of homeowners insurance you have, you can file an insurance claim for these types of incidents and have many, if not all, of the costs paid for.

From the outset a good emergency restoration service will pay strict heed to health and safety, conducting an in-depth risk assessment of the home to be sure that all structural concerns and health risks are identified before they call the job complete. Following this and before beginning any serious work on the job, an emergency restoration service should immediately implement any stabilization procedure that might be necessary. Fire and water damage both can rot walls, ceilings, and floors, any of which may need immediate reinforcing. And by using dehumidifiers and such to regulate the ambient environment, the possibility of mold is significantly reduced.

To give yourself the opportunity to file an insurance claim to pay for emergency restoration services and reduce further damage and losses, make sure you have the right types of insurance. Read your current homeowners insurance policy to see if it has any provisions for fire damage repair and water damage repair. If not, take action to supplement that insurance for those purposes before you may need them, and then it would be too late.

When experiencing fire or water damage there is no time to waste, and suffering an emergency like a flood or a fire in your home is traumatic enough without having to suffer further damage after the incident. The quickest way to cause yourself further grief is to try to handle all the emergency repair and restoration yourself. The quickest way to relief and getting your life back is with the aid of the right expert professionals

The Benefits Of Frequent Air Duct Cleaning

If you own a home or a business, it is important to understand that you can take proactive measures to improve the quality of your air. A building's air ducts act as passageways for warm and cool air to spread. They collect air from rooms with a regulator and filter, heat or cool it and send it back at a designated temperature. While it's easy to take this process for granted, when we forget about it, we run the risk of breathing in contaminated air. An annual duct cleaning can improve your health, reduce sickness and lower your utility bills.

Oftentimes, uncleaned ducts will accumulate a significant amount of dust, dirt and grime. When these particles sit in building ducts for an extended period of time, they can alter air flow. If there's enough accumulation, they'll reduce not only the quality of the air that is emitted into your living or working space, but also the quantity of air. When you have your ducts cleaned, you might lower your heating and cooling bills as a result of a more efficient airflow.

Homes with high moisture run the risk of air ducts with mold. If mold grows in your home or office air ducts and you breath it in, your health will severely suffer. Rely on an HVAC expert to clean the mold out of your ducts. If you have metal ducts, the cleaning job will be relatively simple. Those with plastic ducts will have more of a challenge as plastic usually retains mold after a cleaning and oftentimes needs to be fully replaced.

When a professional cleans out your ducts, he or she will eliminate all of the other particles aside from mold. All sorts of particles accumulate in ducts. These include dust, allergens, dirt, insect droppings and numerous other contaminants. This isn't the type of stuff that you want you and your family or co-workers to breathe in. So, schedule an air duct cleaning at least once a year to ensure that you are breathing in only the highest quality air.

While your air duct specialist is cleaning out your ducts, he or she will also take a look around for any signs of cracks and tears. Air ducts are meant to serve as fully solid barriers that don't leak out any hot or cold air. This way, your living or working space can be heated or cooled in a cost-efficient manner. If any tears or cracks are found, you can have them repaired as soon as possible in order to lower your utility bills and improve your air quality over the long run.

Basic Facts About Water Damage

The effects brought about by water damage in your home can be devastating, not just because of the damages it can cause to your most valued possessions but also the danger it can cause to your health. Hence, it should not left sitting in your home for a long period of time. Regardless of the cause that may have started it, what's important is that it should be dealt with accordingly and properly.

The kind of restoration service that you need will depend on the type of water, too, that is in your home. Is it gray, black or clean? Clean water which usually comes out from pipe bursts is not as dangerous as the black water from which potential health problems may occur.

If you don't take the water out as soon as possible, then you can expect to have some mold growth that could further damage your properties. This could also lead to serious health hazards like respiratory sicknesses such as asthma and any other allergic reactions. Molds can grow almost anywhere and, depending on the level of humidity of the area, it can start appearing in just about 24 to 48 hours.

Black water can also be highly unsanitary and being in close contact with it can expose you to some kinds of bacteria and even fungi that live in dirty water. The black water comes from raw sewage, the ones from flooded streams, and any kind of standing water.

The gray water is another hazardous type since it contains a lot of contaminants which can cause various kinds of sickness when you are exposed to it. This gray water is found in water toilets, dishwashers and the washing machines.

Materials which are considered porous can be damaged once exposed to water like carpets, pads, flooring which is made out of hardwood, drywall and the wall insulation behind. Other problems like plumbing malfunctions, accidental leaks and other natural causes can also lead to serious water damage.

You can surely expect to lose a lot of your personal belongings and possessions with water damage if it is not treated promptly.

Hence, if you want to protect your home and your household members, you must always take a proactive approach like doing regular routine maintenance for your home. You must check ahead of time some potential problems that might arise so that you can save a lot of money and time when an unfortunate event happens.

To act responsible and be accountable is the best way to protect your home against the worst effects that water damage can bring. To speed up your drying method, you must utilize fans and a couple of dehumidifiers placed in the right spots in your home. You must also not forget to contact your insurance company to know which claims you can make that would cover some of the damages. By doing this, you will be able to save a lot and even collect reimbursements for the possible expenses you will incur on repairing the damaged parts of your home.
