Fire and Smoke Damage - Cleaning Up the Smell

Dealing with the smell left by fire and smoke is by far one of the most challenging, and important things that you must do whenever your home is damaged by smoke and fire. Although the visible signs may be removed, it is very possible for the pervasive smell of smoke to linger, making the rooms in your home uncomfortable, and possibly unhealthy. In order to make sure that you save as many of your belongings as possible, and to reduce the risk of long-term damage, you should initiate a professional cleaning process as quickly as possible. This is especially true for items such as draperies, carpets and upholstery.

Clothing

Because it is so pervasive, the smell can remain on your clothing even after several washes. To remove all of the soot and smell from your smoke damaged clothing will require a variety of different methods, depending on the type of fabric. Depending on the level of damage that your clothes receive, you may decide to replace many of your clothing items. If it is something that you just can't part with, however, consider having them professionally cleaned and restored. Dry cleaners and restoration specialists use a variety of tools, techniques and cleaning products to ensure that your clothes are soot and smoke free.

Drapes, Carpets & Upholstered Furniture

Similar to your clothes, your drapes, carpets and upholstered furniture can trap soot and smoke, resulting in a long-lasting unpleasant odor. Furthermore, this pervasive smell can transfer itself back onto your clothing, leading to a cycle that never ends. To begin the cleaning process, there are many things that you can do yourself. Start by brushing your drapes and furniture with a brush vacuum, or brush. This will help to remove any remaining soot, and should not result in any further damage. To complete the deodorization process, you will want to work closely with a smoke damage restoration specialist in your area. There are many different techniques and tools that are used, such as ozone treatment, that must be performed by a professional. Whenever they are finished, your drapes, upholstery and carpet will be just like new. Keep in mind that some carpets and upholstery may need to be replaced.

Walls

In addition to the fabrics in your home, smoke can enter and leave its smell in your walls. Although this odor may diminish over time, it can return if it is not quickly and properly dealt with. If special materials were damaged during the fire, such as insulation, they must be removed and replaced. These materials cannot be cleaned. This can also be true with your drywall, depending on the extent of the smoke damage.

Regardless of how much of your home has been damaged, and to what extent, the most important thing to do during clean up is to talk with a professional as soon as possible. When improperly cleaned, or left unchecked, smoke damage can perpetuate itself, and even become worse. Save yourself unnecessary time and discomfort by working with someone who knows what they are doing.

Why You Shouldn't Attempt Mold Damage Removal On Your Own

Mold damage is a pretty serious problem that should generally be addressed only by certified mold damage removal companies that will have the proper training and knowledge to carry out the removal process in the right manner.

Some homeowners think that this is a fairly simple problem and try to go about performing a cleanup on their own although they will rarely succeed. Here are some of the main reasons why mold damage removal is not something that should be done by the homeowners themselves.

• Addressing the source of the problem - A proper removal process will need to address the reason why mold became a problem in the first place. A restoration cleanup company will often be able to quickly detect why your problem began. They will usually detect a water leak that will be the prime reason behind the mold attack. Mold grows in moist environments and it is very important that the damage removal will also address the source of moisture if one does not want to experience recurrent attacks in the future.

• What type of mold - Experts suggest that there are more than 100,000 varieties of mold. Most of them will have a strong musty odor and also have a greenish or brownish color to them. However, some will be colorless and not obvious to the human eye. Only an expert mold cleanup contractor will know what sort of mold is affecting your property. He will take steps accordingly.

• What is the extent of growth? - This is where most do it yourself homeowners go wrong when it comes to mold damage removal. They will see mold in a certain area and assume that just that area is affected by mold. However, mold damage can extend into unseen areas such as spaces in between walls, false ceiling and so on. A mold removal company will be able to do a full assessment when it comes to mold growth.

• Equipment and chemicals used to clean up - Once a mold cleanup plan is drawn up by the mold damage removal company, they will use effective, heavy duty equipment such as dehumidifiers, blowers, dryers and EPA approved chemicals to clean up the mold problem in your house. They will also use protective clothing that is very important, especially when dealing with dangerous black mold.

As you can see, you will have the best chance of recovering from a mold attack if you let professionals do the job in your house. Mold can cause many problems to both the people living in the house as well as to the property itself.

Children, elderly people and pregnant women can be affected by various respiratory problems such as asthma and other lung infections. Other problems such as irritations, skin rashes and even pneumonia are also possible. As for property damage, heavy mold infestations can result in extensive losses as mold infestation will often damage walls, ceiling and floors to a point where they are beyond repair.
Call the services of a professional mold removal company for a free estimate right away if you haven't done so already.

An Explanation of the IICRC Water Damage Classification Used in Flood Restoration

The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is one of the largest non-government organizations in the United States that sets standards for people in the field of flood restoration. Among its many contributions to the fields of inspection and cleaning, the IICRC has created a Water Damage Classification (WDC) system, to better assist the treatment of damage in buildings or homes that have been overexposed to water. In the event that your home is damaged and needs to undergo flood restoration, it is important that you understand the WDC, as doing so will allow you to be aware of the potential threats to your property.
The WDC is broken down into four classes, each one determined by the volume of water present in a designated area. These grades go from 1 to 4, with 4 having the most severe consequences in regards to property deterioration and potential health threats.
Class 1: Limited Intrusion
A minimal amount of liquid has been introduced into the area. The area might also have a high potential for evaporation, with little extenuating damage to furniture, walls, carpet, and carpet cushions. For some Class 1 situations, it might be possible to dry out the area with fans.
Class 2: Some spread
This grade indicates that some moisture has spread beyond a single spot in the room. It might have risen into the walls, where it can be absorbed into the insulation or structural materials, such as timber, concrete, or particleboard. It might also have been absorbed into the padding beneath the carpet or flooring. These areas have the potential to grow mold or other growths if left unchecked.
Class 3: Invasive Liquid
In this grade, most surfaces in the area, including walls, ceilings, flooring, and furniture, have been soaked with moisture. Lines or marks on the walls indicating moisture can be found more than 2 feet above the floor. Damage like this is often caused by burst plumbing in a second-floor room leaking into the ceiling or through the walls. In cases like this, it is sometimes necessary to remove some of the building materials, as the extensive damage will render them irreparable. Special drying and dehumidification equipment will be required to return some remaining stuffs to their pre-damage state.
Class 4: Inaccessible Material
In some cases, flooding to the area is so severe that items not normally exposed or accessible are saturated with liquid. This makes it extremely difficult or impossible for traditional flood restoration techniques to save these materials. Special drying and dehumidification equipment, as well as more advanced techniques, can sometimes be used to dry components in crawl-spaces, under oil-based paint, behind cabinets, etc. It is also sometimes the case that these materials are not salvageable.
In addition to assessing the severity of damage in a location, an inspector must also determine the quality of the liquid permeating the area. "Clean Water" is much easier to address than a situation with "Black Water," or water that can contain potentially life-threatening organisms. The presence of Black Water might affect your space's grading.
After an inspector has assessed the nature of the damage to your property and belongings, he or she will work with a team of certified IICRC-certified technicians to begin bringing your home back to its original state. They will use everything from old-fashioned scrubbing to microbial remediation to rid the space of moisture and any potentially threatening organisms. The IICRC's WDC grading will help make this an easier process, should your home ever need flood restoration.

Why You Need Air Duct Cleaning: Mold, Mildew, And More

Your heating and air system is much more than just the box in your yard. There is an entire network of air ducts that sends conditioning throughout your home, and the quality of this network dramatically affects your comfort. Just like any other mechanical device, air duct cleaning is an essential part of maintaining the quality of your system. Without proper care, there are a number of problems that can occur without you even realizing what is wrong.

Mold and Mildew

During the summer, anytime your AC is not running, the ductwork is getting hotter. When you send cold air into the house, the ductwork rapidly cools, causing condensation. Normally, the strength of the flow would prevent the condensation from lingering in the ducts. However, over time, the flow in your system can decline, particularly if the sealing on the ductwork starts to weaken. If this occurs, moisture will sit in the ductwork and create mold. If left unchecked, mildew can cause several issues in your home.

The first concern that can be created by mold is stench. Mildew festers, and if the problem gets bad enough, you can be sending stale, stinky oxygen throughout the house every time you crank up the thermostat. While this is certainly inconvenient, there are much more serious health risks associated with mold. Mold spores that become airborne can travel into the house, infecting the walls, carpet, and furniture. Over time, it can cause illness and breathing issues. Air duct cleaning will eliminate all traces of mold and mildew, and it will also improve the performance of your system by eliminating dust.

Dust Buildup

No matter how often you clean, your house is full of dust. Dead skin cells, fecal matter, pollen, and pet dander all contribute to what we know as simple household dust. Dust is a major issue for a heating and ventilation system. In large quantities, it can actually increase the cooling demand on the home. This increases the runtime of your AC unit, which makes your power bills get bigger. Your ductwork is essentially a giant vacuum hose that pulls everything out of the air and sends it through the system.

While there are filters that deal with some of the dust issues, the reality is that very few people have adequate filtration installed in their home. Only with expensive cleaners and purifiers can the dust issue be truly eliminated. For most homeowners, the filter is merely a bandage, preventing an issue from getting worse rather than solving it. When filtration fails, large quantities of dust start to build up in the ductwork. If enough buildup occurs, it can start to affect the flow through the system. This yet again increases runtimes, further escalating your power bills. Instead of simply being a nuisance, dust buildup can actually start to cost you hundreds of dollars a year.

The good news is that all these issues are entirely preventable. Call a local contractor today and ask them how air duct cleaning can benefit your home.
